The verdict

If you love optimizing every action and don't need a three-hour epic to feel satisfied, this is one of the best small-box Euros going. Just know it's tight and a little fiddly.

Best for: Euro fans who want a brain-burner that respects their evening

The full review

What it is

The White Castle drops you into feudal Japan at Himeji Castle, and your job is to push your clan's warriors, gardeners, and courtiers into the right spots before the dust settles. The clever bit is the dice. They sit on little bridges, and you grab one from either end, then slot it into a matching worker. Low dice cost you coins, high dice pay you, and pulling from the left hands you a lantern. That one choice ripples through everything.

The catch

Here's the catch, and it's a real one. You get nine turns. That's it. Three rounds, three actions each, and every single one has to earn its keep. Players who like room to breathe tend to bounce off it, because there's no sandbox here and no forgiveness. The board is also genuinely busy. Reviewers and first-timers keep reporting the same thing: the icons hide information, and almost everyone fumbles a rule or two on their first play. Read carefully.

Who it's for

Once it clicks, though, it sings. Fans of Lost Ruins of Arnak, The Red Cathedral, and Tiletum keep landing on this one for good reason. It shines hardest at two or three players, where downtime stays low and the puzzle stays sharp, and the solo mode is clean to run. You won't get an epic. You'll get a tight, combo-rich hour that leaves you wanting another go immediately. For the box size and price, that's a steal.
