The verdict

It's a gorgeous, mean, fast-playing area-control game that lets you lose battles on purpose and still come out ahead. Card luck can sting, but the theme and the fights land hard enough that most groups forgive it.

Best for: Groups who want bloody, interactive combat without hours of downtime

The full review

What it is

Blood Rage hands each player a clan of Vikings and one job: grab glory before Ragnarok burns the whole board down. You draft cards over three ages, spend a tight pool of Rage to march your minis out, then pillage regions and brawl over them. Combat is blind card reveal, so every fight is a bluff. Eric Lang built a war game where the point isn't to survive. It's to go out loud.

The catch

Here's the twist real players keep praising. Dying is good. The right cards score you points for losing a battle, and Ragnarok wipes whole regions, so you can plan your own glorious death. That sounds clever, and it is, but it leans on the draft. Pull a strong Loki run and you're laughing. Miss your cards and you'll feel boxed out. Shut Up & Sit Down also flagged hollow kingmaking and some genuinely tacky female sculpts.

Who it's for

So who's this for? Players who want a confrontational, gorgeous fight that wraps in about 90 minutes and keeps everyone in it, not the analysis-paralysis crowd and not solo gamers, since there's no co-op mode. The thin player mats are a real nitpick. But if you like reading the table, betting on a clash, and dying with a grin, Blood Rage earns its spot. It's mean in the best way.
