Still one of the best ways to get a full table playing at once without downtime, and the second edition fixes the components without touching what works. If you don't own it yet, this is the version to buy.
Best for: Mixed groups who want depth without a long teach or dead time between turns.
What it is
Here's the trick that makes 7 Wonders work. Everybody drafts at the same time. You pick a card from your hand, pass the rest to your neighbor, and build up an ancient city across three ages. Antoine Bauza designed it so a seven-player game still wraps in about half an hour, because nobody waits their turn. You're chaining resources, recruiting science symbols, stacking military, and the decisions feel meaningful even when the rules stay light.
The catch
Now the honest part. For a game about civilizations clashing, you really only tangle with the two people beside you, so it can feel like everyone's quietly solving their own puzzle. New players also hit a wall with the icons. The cards lean hard on symbols, and the end scoring (especially those science combos) trips people up the first time or two. The two-player mode bolts on a dummy city and just isn't the point. Grab 7 Wonders Duel for that.
Who it's for
Once your group knows the symbols, this thing sings, and it earns its spot as a gateway-plus game you'll keep on the shelf for years. The second edition is the version to own. Bauza left the gameplay alone and just gave it bronze, silver, and gold cards, bigger Wonder boards, and a chain reference chart that makes teaching far easier. If you already own the original, the shinier cards alone won't justify the swap.
